Visualizing the Racial and Income Displacement Effects of Gentrification in New York City
The debate surrounding gentrification is one of revitalization of deteriorating neighborhoods versus displacement of the individuals who live there. New York City is a common case-study of gentrification with rising rents and many displaced low income people of color. In this study, I attempt to visualize the racial and income displacement effects in New York City between 1990 and 2010. Using Cluster-Outlier analysis on census data I find that clusters of low-income areas overlapped with Black and Hispanic neighborhoods in 1990. I also find that subsequently the areas that faced the highest decline in Black and Hispanic populations also saw increases in their White population.
