<image:title>About - I am a PhD candidate in Economics at Cornell University.</image:title>
<image:caption>I graduated from Grinnell College in 2019 with a degree in Economics and a concentration in Statistics. I subsequently worked as an Analyst in the Antitrust practice at NERA Economic Consulting in New York City. My research interests broadly lie at the intersection of development and labor economics. My goal is to conduct policy-relevant research that provides insight on worker behavior & labor markets in developing countries. Currently, I am exploring job creation in high value industries in India and how labor market concentration and mass layoffs affect migration and other worker outcomes in Brazil. ts724@cornell.edu linkedin</image:caption>

<image:title>Undergraduate Research - Ideological Determinants of Voting Behavior in the 2016 US Presidential Election - Ideological Determinants of Voting Behavior in the 2016 US Presidential Election</image:title>
<image:caption>The 2016 election marked a departure from previous elections, as identity became a more salient predictor of voter behavior than ever before. In this paper we use survey data from the Grinnell College National Poll to construct a predictive model of voter behavior in the 2016 election based on voter’s self-reported membership of various identity groups. We create a logistic regression model containing both the identity and demographic variables found to be important in previous literature in predicting a voter’s likelihood of voting for Trump. We found that voters who identified as feminist or progressive were significantly less likely to vote for Trump, whereas believers in “America First” and gun rights or who identified as “politically incorrect” were more likely to vote for Trump. Our findings support previous research that found that ideological self-identification was a powerful predictor of voting behavior in the 2016 election.</image:caption>

<image:title>Undergraduate Research - Voter Turnout in India: A Constituency Level Analysis - Voter Turnout in India: A Constituency-level Empirical Analysis</image:title>
<image:caption>Studies on voter turnout in India often fall short on scope or scale, thereby failing to provide strong conclusions. Thanks to newly available large-scale electoral data from Ashoka University’s Trivedi Centre for Political Data, this study sets out to explain the determinants of voter turnout in India at the constituency level. It reviews literature on turnout from India and other parts of the world to build a model that explains voter turnout using factors associated with individual elections. Our findings are generally consistent with the literature and indicate that the size and urbanization of a constituency along with closeness and competitiveness of elections are important in determining turnout in India’s general elections.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This report seeks to explore whether Grinnell College students exhibit spatial patterns of social division in shared dining spaces. It draws upon spatial and demographic data voluntarily provided by 465 Grinnell College students and collected through an interactive, online survey. It uses kernel density analysis and visualization in order to identify patterns of clustering based on demographic information in the Marketplace Dining Hall and the Spencer Grill. Our results reveal compelling evidence of athletes and off-campus residents congregating in the Commons of the dining hall and international student congregation in the Cozy. However, we do not find any significant separation among communities in the Spencer Grill.</image:caption>
